Kitchen Management 101
By making less trips to the grocery store (because you have all of the staples in stock) and knowing what you have so it gets used; getting your kitchen organized can save you both time & money!
First, start with a good cleaning. Walls, ceiling, inside the cabinets, under the appliances…everything! As you empty the cabinets and the refrigerator, throw away anything that is expired, stale, or could possibly be the cure for an un-known disease. Newer spices and products will have expiration dates on them. If you find some in your cabinet that do not, chances are, they are older than the recommended 1 year, and should be disposed of. Make a list as you go of what foods that you keep in stock. Mark anything that you need to replace. When you are done, make a clean list to keep on hand for taking an inventory before you go shopping.
As you put everything back, group items in categories; condiments, baking, drink mixes, plastic cups, plates, mixing bowls….and make sure that you do not put away any Tupperware that doesn’t have a lid! Use a label maker to label where groups of items should live.
Put the more frequently used items in reach. If you only use something once a month it won’t be much of an inconvenience to get a stool out to reach it. Things that are used once a year or less can even be stored outside of the kitchen. (Make a note to yourself where things are and tape it to the inside of your cabinet)
